CEU Course Review

AL CEU Review

Continuing Education (CE) Providers are encouraged to offer quality educational courses for licensed electronic security dealers. AESBL licensees are required to participate in on-going professional education to maintain their license. The CEU review process is an effective tool for marketing an organization’s education courses.

The Association reviews these applications as required by AESBL.  A $75 Fee per course submitted is required and can only be paid by credit card using this system.  We accept PayPal, MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover.  Once you have paid the fees, then you will be able to complete the application and begin the process.

Please read the requirements below to ensure your companies compliance with the State Of Alabama.

The following minimum requirements are established for continuing education courses reviews:

  1. It is expected that CE Providers use instructors that have the highest quality teaching skills as well as appropriate education, experience, and applicable licensing.
  2. The goal of the class must be to provide quality education. The goal may not be to sell, promote or advertise any products or services.
    1. Courses submitted as “product-specific” which appear to be sales pitches or product endorsements will not receive an AAA course number.
    2. Programs covering “generic” or “product-specific” topics or content may be eligible for accreditation. Generic subject matter means that the skills or knowledge gained by the attendees during the course is easily transferable from one product or product line to another. For example, a course covering selection of correct types of wire for a given system based on the use, environment, load, etc., could apply to any manufacturer or system type.
    3. This distinction is important because AAA does not endorse specific manufacturer’s products. The AAA endorses competence in given areas of expertise. Product-specific courses may be recommended when they are designed to convey application guidelines, proper installation, service, or troubleshooting techniques.
  3. ONLINE COURSES: In addition to criteria 1 and 2, online courses must also comply with the following:
    1. Use an approved method of validating attendance, which may include attendance tracking log files or time on task analysis, credit can be given only for the amount of time the user has actually spent in the online session.
    2. Online provider has taken steps to insure the integrity of the attendance form. Verification of attendance must be issued by online provider and not be self-created by student.
    3. A secure environment must be provided where users are authenticated via a login and password system.
    4. Security must be in place to protect the student’s personal and financial information.

Organizations interested in receiving a course number must apply to have their courses reviewed for recommendation.  Applications must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the presentation date.

Applications must include:

  1.  Application form
  2. A course syllabus that contains the following:
    1. Brief course description including delivery methods (instructor led, webinar, online, distance learning, etc.)
    2. Length of course plus timed breakdown of the concepts covered.
    3. Intended audience—indicate the intended audience and course content must be a reasonable match for that audience. For example, if the course content was on the installation and adjustment of infrared detectors, the appropriate audience would be installers and service technicians, not sales representatives. Courses with content inappropriate for the target audience will not receive a course number.
    4. Key learning objectives. For example, “At the completion of this course attendees will be able to: understand how EMS will provide dramatic increases in security and reduction in costs, how robotic vision systems save lives and protect property,

and why they are an important new weapon in the war on terror” is a reasonable objective—for security center operators.  It may not be a good match, however, for the people who have to install, adjust or troubleshoot it.

Each course a CE Provider wishes to have reviewed requires a separate application.  The application form may be duplicated.  Only one application is necessary for programs with multiple presentation dates, providing the presentation does not vary in length or content.

In the event significant changes are made to the course, such as:  course objectives, delivery method, or hours offered, providers must resubmit CEU review application.

Every one hour of qualified education will be eligible for 1 CEU (or renewal credit).

In order for an application to be reviewed and processed it must include a course review fee and the required documentation.

Alabama course numbers are valid for three years.  Once the Alabama course number time has lapsed, the CE provider shall not use the assigned course number to promote their courses.  It is required that CE providers reapply for a new Alabama course number every three years due to the rapid advancements in technology and codes and standards’ revision cycle.

CE Providers are required to verify attendance of all students and provide them with a  record of their attendance.  Records of attendance should be emailed to education@alabamaalarm.org and  include:  name of attendee, date of course, course title, instructor, and number of hours attended.  AESBL licensees are required to maintain individual documentation for courses attended.

2018 CEU Course Status

Alabama Alarm Association

CEU Course schedules are planned and submitted to ESA on or before December 15 preceding the next training year. The Schedule does not guarantee a class will be made. Three factors contribute to class cancellations.

  1. Student interest
  2. Ability to order materials in a timely fashion to “Make” the class.
  3. Instructor Availability

We can ONLY make an Instructor Led Class if we have ten (10) or more students enrolled.  If we cancel a class it is primarily due to lack of student interest.  We will notify everyone who has “enrolled” in a class by email and phone if that class is to be cancelled.  Alternatively, to meet the needs of students that require CEU credits to meet license requirements in some cases we have sufficient student interest to use our new Online Instructor Led Training (OILT) using Zoom Video Conferencing Services.  You will be contacted by Roger Beckham, Enrollment Specialist, if the Instructor Led Course you registered for is eligible for OILT and if you want to participate.  If so, instructions will be emailed to you for that course.  If you have any questions regarding OILT or any other education requirements contact Roger Beckham, (334) 676-4274 or extension 105 on the Toll Free Number.

Remaining Instructor Led Classes for 2018

Understanding Electronic Security Systems – UESS, Birmingham, October 22 @ 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

This class has been cancelled due to a lack of registration.

Remaining Fall Classes

There are 13 remaining Instructor Led classes for the 2018 term.  As a reminder you are required to have 16 CEU credits every two years to renew your license.  ESA National Training School requires the following:

  1. Books are ordered 10 business days in advance of  of the class start date.

Consequently we will, moving forward in 2019,  be strictly adhering to this policy. Roger Beckham, our student enrollment specialist will assist you in getting your staff enrolled expeditiously but will be limited on his ability to stray from the cutoff date.

For the remainder of 2018, (and until Michelle comes on board) I will be working with ESA to accommodate last minute registrants.  Again, please correspond with Roger to ensure your enrollment.

Roger will be sending you notifications if a class has “made” or not, so go ahead and register and we will keep you informed.

If our Instructor Led class schedule does not work with you or your staff, I would suggest using our online courses which can be ordered here.  We are looking to expand our “Live” Video Online Training with Larry Mann and will be announcing those courses again on December 1, 2018.

Click here to review the remaining 2018 Instructor Led Courses for this year and contact Roger Beckham at extension 105 or email rbeckham@alabamaalarm.org to assist you with enrollment.

Always feel free to contact me directly.
